A Farewell to Ghassan Khalaf – في وداع غسان خلف

Lebanon, the Middle East, and the world lost today arguably one of the best Arab Christian theologians of modern history: Ghassan Khalaf.

For those who do not know him, Ghassan Khalaf was a well-known and much-beloved Evangelical pastor, professor, writer, and preacher among Evangelical Arabs around the globe. In many ways, he was our Arab Billy Graham and N. T. Wright (one of the best biblical scholars in the world today) all wrapped up in one person.

 

In all ways he was our living example of Jesus Christ.

 

As I scroll through my newsfeed on Facebook today, I see hundreds of loving words being said to pastor Ghassan Khalaf.

I am saddened by the fact that I did not know him more. He was never my pastor. He only taught me one theology course. I did, thankfully, hear him preach over ten times. I only had one long conversation with him a few months ago.

I will add a few words as his family, children, colleagues, students, friends, and thousands of disciples praise his blessed life.

 

He strove with all his heart and strength to keep learning, and had a doctorate, published many books, and was a well-known speaker in many Arab conventions and theological committees.

Yet, he was one of the most humble people I have ever met. I can say, in all faithfulness, that I have rarely met someone like him who is both excellent and humble.

Not only that, but I was always amazed how he always managed to give deep theological truths in simple words. His books, sermons, and lectures could be attended by anyone. He was at ease in theological conversations with experts, students, lay people, and children.

I can say, in all faithfulness, that I have rarely met a teacher and preacher like him who is both deep and simple.

In our last, and only conversation, he told me of a number of exciting books he was working on in Arabic. When I heard the news of his death this morning, my first thought was how sad it is that he will never be able to finish those books. He will never again teach a class, or preach from the pulpit, or sit in deep spiritual conversation with a disciple.

I will keep one image of him in my head. When he would preach, or at least whenever I heard him preach, he would always, at some point in the sermon start to speak about Jesus. His eyes would light up. His face would shine. He would stretch out both hands towards the audience, and then say in a powerful yet loving voice: “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!”

 

May we learn from your example, Rev. Dr. Ghassan Khalaf (although you never cared for titles).

May we learn to seek knowledge with all our hearts.

May we learn to serve others with all our hearts.

But above all, may we learn to love our Lord Jesus Christ with all our hearts.

 

The coming generations will not know you personally, but your graceful presence will continue to impact hundreds of thousands of people in our dark world.

Like Ghassan Khalaf,

Through them

You remind us

That being like Jesus is possible

خسر اليوم لبنان، الشرق الأوسط، والعالم واحد من أفضل اللاهوتيين المسيحيين العرب في التاريخ الحديث: غسان خلف

لمن لم يكن يعرف، غسان خلف هو  راعي وأستاذ جامعي وكاتب وواعظ عربي إنجيلي معروف ومحبوب حول العالم. هو في عدة طرق بيلي غراهام ون. ت. رايت (وهو أحد أفضل علماء الكتاب المقدس حاليا) عند العرب في شخص واحد

وهو في كل الطرق مثال حي عن يسوع المسيح

بينما كنت أتصفح فايسبوك اليوم، رأيت مئات الكلمات المحبّة تُقال للراعي غسان خلف

وحزنت لأنني لم أعرفه أكثر. لم يكن يوما قسيسا لي. علمني فقط صف لاهوت واحد. حالفني الحظ بسماعه يعظ أكثر من عشرة مرات. وكان لي حديث طويل وحيد معه قبل بضعة أشهر

سأزيد كلمات قليلة بينما عائلته وأولاده وزملاؤه وتلاميذه وأصدقائه وآلاف من تلاميذه يحتفلون بحياته المباركة

سعى بكل قلبه وقوته ليستمر بالتعلّم، ونال شهادة الدكتوراه، ونشر عدة كتب، وكان متكلما معروفا في عدة مؤتمؤات ولجان لاهوتية

ولكنه، بالرغم من ذلك، كان من أكثر الناس تواضعا. أستطيع أن أقول، بكل أمانة، أنني نادرا ما التقيت بشخص مثله يجمع صفَتَي الإمتياز والتواضع

ليس ذلك فحسب، ولكنني كنت اندهش كيف استطاع دائما أن يعطي حقائق لاهوتية عميقة في كلمات بسيطة. كان يستطيع كل انسان أن يقرأ كتاباته ويحضر عظاته ومحاضراته. كنت تجده مرتاحا في الأحاديث اللاهوتية مع الإختصاصيين، والتلاميذ، والعلمانيين، والأولاد

وأستطيع أن أقول بكل أمانة أنني نادرا ما التقيت بمعلم وواعظ مثله عميق وبسيط في آن معا

في آخر حديث لنا، وهو للأسف الوحيد، أخبرني عن عدد من الكتب العربية التي كان يكتبها. وأول ما سمعت بخبر وفاته هذا الصباح فكّرت كم أنه أمر محزن أنه لن يستطيع إكمال هذه الكتب ونشرها. لن يعلم صفا بعد الأن، ولن يقف على منبر بعد الأن، ولن يجلس في حديث لاهوتي عميق مع أحد التلاميذ بعد الأن

سأُبقي له صورة محددة في ذهني. كان كلما يعظ، أو على الأقل كلما سمعته يعظ، يصل لنقطة يتكلم فيها عن يسوع. فتبرق عيناه ويلمع وجهه ويفرد يديه أمامه نحو الجمهور ويقول بقوة ومحبة: يسوع، يسوع، يسوع

ليتنا نتعلم من مثالك حضرة القس الدكتور غسان خلف – وانت من لم يحب الألقاب

ليتنا نتعلم أن نسعى للمعرفة بكل قلوبنا

لبتنا نتعلم أن نخدم الآخرين من كل قلوبنا

وفوق كل شيء، ليتنا نتعلم أن نحب ربنا يسوع المسيح من كل قلوبنا

لن تعرفك الأجيال القادمة شخصيا، ولكن حضورك المنعم سيستمر في التأثير في مئات الآلاف في عالمنا المظلم

دعونا نقف لنصلي

يا رب

شكر على أناس

مثل غسان خلف

من خلالهم

تُذكّرنا

بأن التشبّه يسوع ممكن

آمين
