Is the Syrian the Enemy? هل السوري هووي العدو؟

Many of the Lebanese, generally speaking, have not been good friends with Syrians over the past 30 years. For many Lebanese, Syria is the occupier who controlled Lebanon with its military up to 2005.

Since 2011, and as approximately 2 million Syrian refugees, most of them Muslim, made their way to Lebanon (with a population of 4.5 million), the Lebanese generally, and the Christian population particularly, have kept calling for the return of the Syrians to Syria.

Hatred is on the rise. You can feel it as you read the signs in the Lebanese towns that ban Syrians from walking the streets after 8:00 pm. You can feel it as you stroll through Facebook and come across Lebanese videos and pages cursing the Syrians. You can feel it as you sip coffee in a house visit and the talk invariably returns to how the Syrians are taking all the jobs.

It is true that the huge population of refugees has had a negative impact on the Lebanese economy and infrastructure. I have also previously argued that their presence is a blessing to Lebanon.

The question becomes: is the Syrian refugee in Lebanon truly the enemy of the Lebanese people?

I think not.

Who is the enemy then?

The enemy is the many countries funding and encouraging the war in Syria.

The enemy is our failed government(s) which, even before the coming of the Syrians to Lebanon, was unable to give us 24/7 electricity, reliable internet, good roads, acceptable wages, and most other services.

The enemy is religious fundamentalism and dictatorships that refuse the existence of the other.

The enemy is hate, racism, and the refusal to put ourselves in other people’s shoes.

But this is not a post to rant about the rise of hate in Lebanon. Nor is this a post to convince the haters to love the refugees. That is beyond my power.

This is a post to encourage the other 50% (or perhaps more?), those Lebanese people, most of them poor, who are refusing to join the wave of hate against the Syrians.

To them, I say, as the hate rises so let our love rise!

When in a visit and people start to bash the Syrians. Listen, acknowledge their anger, and then put forth a different opinion. Be the voice of the voiceless.

When you witness abuse from your local police against Syrians, speak up.

If you meet refugees in your building, on the street, or beside your work, give them a smile. Offer your financial support. It is illegal to offer work for Syrians, but it is not illegal to offer food, clothes, money, or any kind of help.

Volunteer your time in an NGO or religious institution helping the refugees.

Become friends with a refugee family. It is almost impossible to hate your friends.

 

Whatever we do, let us not allow the voice of hatred to have the final say.

تبرع بوقتك بجمعية أو مؤسسة دينية عم تساعد النازحين

Were you Happy to See the French Die? هل فرحت لموت الفرنسيين؟

Death has been in the news for the entire world these past few days. The bombing of the Russian plane over Egypt, the suicide bombers in Beirut, and finally the terror attacks in Paris.

Many lives were lost.

We read numbers (45, 128…etc.) but they are people: fathers, mothers, children, friends were lost in these terror attacks.

I have a confession to make:

I wasn’t entirely sad to see people die.

A small part of me (really small I hope – let’s say 2.5%) was actually happy to see the explosions in Paris. A very small part of me was happy to see the French die.

They deserve it, that small part of me said. Let them taste what we have been tasting for many years now. Let them experience the fear of going out on the streets, of living a normal life.

France, and the whole western world, that small part of me continued, have been turning a blind eye as Turkey and others gave money to ISIS. Let them have a taste of their own medicine. The West thinks they are safe and secure in their civilized countries. It seems they are mistaken!

I suspect that others were also happy to see people die in the Beirut explosions. Perhaps some Lebanese Christians thought: It is fine, all the dead are Muslims.

Or perhaps some people with anti-Hezbollah sentiments thought: Let them have it, they brought this on themselves.

I suspect the same can be said of the death of the Russian passengers. Not everyone was truly sad. Maybe even some people were ecstatic.

I am sure most of us are happy to hear about the death of ISIS members in the daily strikes on Syria.

Perhaps, and I might be mistaken (it does happen every now and then), every time we hear of death we aren’t truly sad. In the end, it did not touch us personally. None of our family members or friends were killed. It was another group, another area, another culture, another person.

In a sense, when the other dies, that other group becomes one less person. Our group grows larger as that other group grows smaller. We are happy to see people die, as long as they are not “our” people.

Borders…

What does God see when he looks at us?

Maybe he does not see Arabs and Westerners, or Muslims and Christians, maybe he sees people, his children.

What do we see when we look in the eyes of the other?

Maybe we see God staring back at us

What is the best way to fight this terror, this hatred?

Maybe it is more love

Or maybe it starts with grief, grief over the loss of life, all life

 

Let us stand in prayer:

Lord,

Give us your eyes,

That we might see life

That we might grieve death

That we might be

لدي اعتراف

لم أحزن بالكامل لرؤية الناس يموتون

جزء صغير مني (صغيرا جدا – لنقل 2.5%) فرح بسببب الإنفجارات في باريس. جزء صغير جدا مني فرح لرؤية الفرنسيين يموتون

وقال هذا الجزء الصغير: إنهم يستحقون الموت. ليتذوقوا ما نتذوقه نحن مذ عدة سنوات. ليختبروا الخوف من النزول للشارع وعيش حياة عادية

قال هذا الجزء الصغير مني : فرنسا وكل الغرب تغاضوا عن دعم تركيا وبلدان أخرى لداعش وها هم يعانون من داعش. الغرب يعتقد أنه آمن ومحصن ومتطور ولكنه على خطأ

أعتقد أن بعضنا فرح أيضا لرؤية الناس يموتون في انفجارات بيروت. لربما فكر بعض المسيحيون اللبنانيون: لا بأس، فكل الأموات إسلام

أو ربما بعض الناس الذين يعادون حزب الله فكروا: هم يستحقون الإنفجارات فهم جلبوا هذا الأمر على أنفسهم

أعتقد أن البعض لم يحزن بالكامل على موت المسافرين الروس. لربما حتى احتفل البعض بموتهم

وأنا متأكد أن معظمنا يفرح عندما يسمع بموت أعضاء من داعش في القصف اليومي على سوريا

لربما، وقد أكون على خطأ (يحدث هذا بين الحين والآخر)، ربما كل مرة نسمع فيها عن الموت لا نحزن تماما. بالنهاية، الأمر لم يمسنا شخصيا. لم يمت أحد أفراد عائلتنا أو أحد أصدقائنا. كانت مجموعة أخرى ومنطقة أخرى وثقافة أخرى وشخص آخر

بطريقة ما وكانه عندما يموت شخص آخر ذلك الفريق الآخر يقلّ عددا. تنمو فرقتنا بينما تصغر تلك الفرقة الأخرى. نفرح لرؤية الناس يموتون طالما أن الموتى ليسوا من مجموعتنا

الحدود

ماذا يرى الله عندما ينظر إلينا؟

ربما لا يرى عرب وغربيين، أو مسلمين ومسيحيين، ربما يرى بشرا، أولاده

ماذا نرى عندما ننظر بعيون الآخر؟

ربما نرى الله ينظر إلينا

ما هي أفضل طريقة لمحاربة الإرهاب والرعب؟

ربما هي المحبة

أو ربما الأمر يبدأ بالحزن، الحزن على فقدان الحياة، كل الحياة

دعونا نقف لنصلي

يا رب

أعطنا عيونك

لكي نرى الحياة

ونحزن على الموت

لكي نكون

I hate my family – أكره عائلتي

I hate my family, sometimes.

We have nothing in common.

We do not come from the same family or village, let alone the same country. Some are Syrians, others Iraqi, Palestinians, American, Swiss, and only a few are Lebanese.

We do not have the same hobbies. Some love music, others football, others cooking, others reading, others drama, and some even do not have a hobby except Facebook!

We are not from the same ethnicity. Some are Arabs, others Armenian, others American, others Swiss, others Kurds, and others a mix of many.

We are not from the same religion. Some are Evangelical, others Maronite, others Orthodox, others Shite, and others Sunni.

We are not the same age. Some are toddlers, while others have lived through two world wars.

We have different personalities. Some are outgoing and extrovert, others love to sit on their own, while others are just plain mean.

We do not always know how to get along. We fight, talk about each other behind the back, and hurt each other.

We have different ideas about God. For some, God is an angry God who is constantly breathing down your back, while for others he/she/it is some vague idea which they barely grasp.

We have nothing in common.

Almost nothing…

We have all decided to attend the same church in a little-known area in Beirut, Lebanon.

Is that it?
YES!!

In some weird, magical, ugly, beautiful, captivating, wonderful, silly, awesome way, that makes us one family. We come on Sunday to the same table to eat the same body of Christ and drink the same blood (not literally, it is bread and juice, but again, it is body and blood – mystery).

So, there you are. I am stuck. I am surrounded by people whom under any other circumstance I would not choose to spend my life with. But, they are my family.

I hate them sometimes maybe. I get bored from them sometimes maybe. I think they are weird sometimes maybe.

But they are my family, and I love them, always.

If people will know in any way that we love Christ, if people will have any chance to believe that Jesus is real, then they will have to see him in the love they see between us as family.

What would happen if we thought of the whole world as family?

مدونة #32: أكره عائلتي

أكره عائلتي، أحيانا

لا يوجد أي أمر مشترك بيننا

لا نأتي من نفس العائلة أوالقرية أوالبلد. نحن مجموعة من السوريين والعراقيين والفلسطنيين والأمريكان والسويسريين وبعض اللبنانيين

لا نمتلك نفس الهوايات. بعضنا يحب الموسيقى والبعض الآخر كرة القدم وغيره يحب الطبخ والقراءة والتمثيل وبعضنا حتى يحب أن يمضي نهاره على الفايسبوك

لا نأتي من نفس الإثنية. نحن مجموعة من العرب والأرمن والأمريكان والسويسريين والأكراد أوخليط من كل ما سبق

لا نأتي من نفس الديانة. نحن مجموعة من الإنجليين والموارنة والأورثوذوكس والشيعة والسنة

لسنا من نفس العمر. بعضنا أطفال رضّع والبعض الآخر عايش الحربين العالميتين

لدينا شخصيات مختلفة. هناك المندفع والإنطوائي والشخص السئيل السمج

لا نتفق دائما. نتصارع، نحكي عن بعضناالبعض بالسر، ونجرح بعضنا البعض

لدينا أفكار مختلفة عن الله. للبعض منا الله هو ذلك الإله الغاضب الذي يراقب كل تحركاتنا وللبعض الآخر الله هو أو هي فكرة ما غير واضحة

لا يوجد أي أمر مشترك بيننا

ما عدا أمر واحد

كلنا قررنا أن نذهب لنفس الكنيسة بنفس الحي في بيروت، لبنان

أهذا كل شيء؟

نعم

بطريقة غريبة وسحرية وبشعة وجميلة وآسرة ورائعة وسخيفة ومذهلة ما نحن عائلة واحدة. نأتي كل أحد لنفس الطاولة لنأكل جسد المسيح الواحد ونشرب دم المسيح الواحد (ليس حرفيا، هو فقط خبز وعصير، ولكنه أيضا جسد ودم – يا أخي سر

هذا هو الأمر إذا. أنا محاط بمجموعة من الناس وقُدِّر لي أن أختار تحت أي ظرف آخر من الظروف لما اخترت أن أمضي حياتي معهم. ولكنهم الآن عائلتي

أكرهم أحيانا ربما. أملّ منهم أحيانا ربما. أعتقد أنهم غريبي الأطار أحيانا ربما

ولكنم عائلتي، وأحبهم، دائما

إذا كان الناس سيعرفون أننا نحب المسيح وإذا كان هناك أمل أن يؤمن الناس أن المسيح حقيقي، فهم سيرونه في المحبة التي يرونها بيننا كعائلة

ماذا سيحصل لو فكرنا بكل العالم على أنه عائلتنا؟

يا رب

يا بابا

يا ماما

يا أخي

يا أختي

A Time to Rise – وقت الصعود

There is a time to be silent and a time to shout.

There is a time to sit and a time to act.

There is a time to stand and a time to march

There is a time to lie down, and a time to rise.

Now is the time to rise. Now is the only time. We have nothing left. We are living in garbage. There is no lower level left to reach. There is no deeper hole of corruption left to fall in.

A group of Lebanese people who do not belong to any party or religious sect walk the streets to demonstrate against the garbage crisis. The army and police forces reply with tear-bombs, live bullets, and sticks.

I, for one, will keep going down to the demonstrations. I, for one, will have hope that my children will live in a country and not a jungle.

Until that day, we must call things by their names. Our government are thieves. Our system is corrupt. Our politicians are losers. Our lives are worthless.

What will these protests do? Maybe nothing. The real question is can we remain silent?

No. I think it is time to act. I think it is time to rise.

هناك وقت للسكوت ووقت للصراخ

هناك وقت للجلوس ووقت للتصرف

هناك وقت للوقوف ووقت للتقدم

هناك وقت للنزول ووقت للصعود

والآن وقت الصعود. الآن هو الوقت. لم يعد لدينا شيء نخسره. نحن نعيش في الزبالة. لم يعد هناك من مستوى أدنى لنصل إليه. لم يعد هناك حفرة أعمق من الفساد لنقع بها

مجموعة من اللبنانيين لا تنتمي لأي حزب أو طائفة تمشي شوارع بيروت لتتظاهر ضد أزمة النفايات. الجيش وقوى الأمن ترد عليهم بالقنابل المسيلة للدموع والرصاص الحي والعصي

أنا سأبقى أنزلللشارع. أنا سأبقى متأملا بأن يعيش أولادي في بلد وليس غابة

لحين يأتي ذلك اليوم يجب أن نسمي الأمور بأسمائها. حكومتنا مجموعة لصوص. نظامنا فاسد. سياسيونا فاشلون. وحياتنا بلا قيمة

ماذا ستنجز هذه المظاهرات؟ ربما لا شيء. ولكن السؤال الحقيقي هو، هل بإمكاننا أن نبقى ساكتين؟
لا أعتقد ذلك. حان وقت الصعود

Watching the Birds in England and the Cats in Beirut – مشاهدة الطيور في إنكلترا والقطط في بيروت

I am sitting in a bedroom in Manchester England, in a house that is not my own. I traveled here with money that is not my own. I have just attended a wonderful theology conference and look forward to 40 days of studying sponsored by a people who do not all know me. I am surrounded by love that I do not deserve. At such a time as this, I find myself watching the birds.

There is a wonderful garden outside my window full of many birds and squirrels. I am reminded of Jesus’ words to the crowds in Matthew 6, just after he had warned them from worshiping money, when he invites them to watch the birds of the air and the lilies of the field. He reminds them that the God who takes care of these also will take care of them.

I found myself in the last months full of worry. I forgot Jesus’ words, as usually happens with all of us, about not worrying about tomorrow. Yet the visa came, a kind lady opened her house to me to stay, the college opened its doors for me to study, and I find myself today surrounded by love and looking at the birds.

I know. You are probably saying: Nabil, I worry that I will not have food to eat tomorrow. I worry that I may not be able to pay the tuition for my children’s school. I worry that I might not survive another day of war. You speak of a visa and studies, for me it is a matter of life and death. Well, it was the same at the time of Jesus and worse. The people he is addressing were oppressed by the Romans, living in poverty, and 50% of children died before the age of 10. You do not control tomorrow. Let it go. Trust in him who does. Worry about one thing, loving God and loving others.

Were Jesus to come today and speak, he might say, look at the cats in Beirut. They do not work or have life insurance, yet your Father who is in heaven makes sure they all find food in the garbage before they sleep. He might not say that, but, you get the point.

So, today, Jesus reminds us that we have a heavenly Father who cares and who can. Are we ready to let go of worry? The famous hymn ends with the following refrain:

There are many things about tomorrow
I don’t seem to understand
But I know who holds tomorrow
And I know who holds my hand

Let us stand in prayer:

Lord,

Give us today

Our daily bread

And Lead us not into Worry

For you are in control

Amen

أنا أجلس في غرفة في إنكلترا في مدينة مانشستر في بيت ليس ملكي. لقد سافرت إلى هنا مستخدما مالا ليس مالي. لقد حضرت مؤتمر لاهوت رائع وأتطلع قدما لـ40 يوما من الدراسة برعاية أشخاص ليس كلهم يعرفونني. أنا محاط بمحبة لا أستحقها. وفي مثل هذه الأوقات أجد نفسي أنظر إلى الطيور

هناك حديقة جميلة جدا خارج نافذتي مليئة بالكثير من الطيور والسناجب. وأتذكر كلام يسوع للجموع في متى 6 من بعد أن حذرهم من عبادة المال عندما دعاهم لينظروا إلى طيور السماء وزنابق الحقل. وذكرهم بأن الله الذي يعتني بها يعتني أيضا بهم

وجدت نفسي مهموما في الأشهر الماضية. ونسيت كلام يسوع، كما يحدث معنا جميعان حول عدم الإهتمام بالغد. ولكن الفيزا أتت وامرأة طيبة القلب فتحت لي بيتها لأبيت فيه، والجامعة فتحت لي أبوابها لأدرس، وأجد نفسي محاطا بالمحبة وأنظر للطيور

أعلم. أنتم تقولون: يا نبيل يا حبيبي، انا أهتم بالأكل ليوم غد. انا أهتم بقسط أولادي للمدرسة. أنا أهتم بأن ابقى على قيد الحياة ليوم آخر. أنت تتكلم عن فيزا دراسة ولكن بالنسبة لي الأمر متعلق بالحياة والموت. حسنا، كانت هذه الحالة ايام يسوع وأسوء بعد. الناس الذين كان يكلمهم كانوا يعيشون في الفقر وهم مظلومين من الرومان وكان نصف الأولاد يموتون قبل أن يبلغوا 10 أعوام. أنت لا تسيطر على الغد. دع الأمر. ثق بمن يسيطر على الغد. اهتم بأمر واحد فقط، وهو أن تحب الله وتحب الآخرين

لو أتى يسوع اليوم وتكم لنا، لربما قال، انظروا إلى القطط في بيروت. هي لا تعمل ولا تمتلك تأمين على الحياة ولكن أباكم الذي في السماوات يتأكد أنها تجد الطعام في الزبالة كل يوم قبل أن تنام. أو لربما لن يقول ذلك، ولكن اعتقد أنكم فهمتم قصدي

إذا، اليوم يسوع يذكرنا بأن الآب السماوي يهتم ويقدر. هل نحن مستعدون أن نتخلى عن الهموم؟ الترنيمة المشهورة تنتهي بالقرار التالي

لست أدري ما يكون

من حياتي في الغد

أعلم شيئا يقينا

ربي مُمسك يدي

دعونا نقف لنصلي

يا رب

أعطنا اليوم

خبزنا كفافنا

ولا تدخلنا في الهم

لأنك أنت المسيطر على الأمور
