The newly elected MP, Rola Tabsh, angered her Muslim (Sunni) voters when she participated in a Christmas mass, and as seen in the picture below, came forward to be blessed by the cup of communion. She did not partake of the communion (If she had been a male, would she have received the same reaction?) – for a full report (in Arabic) click here.
As a response to the outrage, she visited Dar el Fatwa (the leading Sunni religious body), heard a lecture about the rules of Islam, said sorry to the clergy, and then apologized to God for her mistake.
This is a very rich incident. One can speak about religious diversity, communion, feminism, and a host of other topics.
I do not wish to take a stand on the actions of the Sunni authorities. I understand their actions. They believe that Islam is the way to God, just like I believe that Jesus is the way to God. They got offended when they saw a member of their own participating in a Christian ritual. I understand that.
I also do not wish to go into detail on the Lebanese “diversity.” I am thankful that for the past 28 years we have mostly stopped killing each other. Are we truly diverse? What about those who do not want to be religious (all of our family laws are sectarian)? What about civil marriage? What about those who want to follow a religion other than Christianity or Islam? Do they have a place among us?
I do want, however, to comment on the issue of taking communion.
For those who do not know, communion is a Christian ritual established by Jesus himself. Christians take a piece of bread and drink some wine (although a few churches use grape juice) to remember the death of Jesus on the cross (bread is his body broken for us; wine is his blood shed for us).
Some churches believe that the bread and wine change into the actual body and blood of Jesus. Others think that these two elements are just a symbol.
The central question over the past decade or so, at least among the Evangelical churches, has not been about the nature of the elements, but about who can partake. Some churches believe that only members of their own church can take. Others take a more lenient stance, and believe that all true Christians can take (how do you define true? That is a different story). Still others believe that everyone is welcome, as long as they understand what is happening.
All Christians can agree, at least, that Jesus is the host of this event. This is his table. I struggle to see Jesus getting angry when seeing a Muslim woman approach his table. Granted, she did not partake. But if she had, I do not that she would have been cursed, the church polluted, or anything of that sort.
I understand her need to apologize from her religious leaders. She was participating in the religious rituals of a different religion.
I do not understand her choice to apologize from God. In fact, it is a shame she did. No, not because this is an insult to Christianity. It is not. It is not a secret that Muslims think Christians are wrong, and Christians think Muslims are wrong. If I did not think there was something different about Christianity, then it would make no sense for me to remain a Christian.
It is a shame she apologized to God, because it would be a small-minded God indeed who is offended if she participates in the celebration of a different group. Who is this God who is offended by rituals?
The God I know is offended by oppression, injustice, and hatred. The God I know is bigger than my religion and my rituals.
This incident with Rola Tabsh has reminded us that we live in a fragile yet rich country. In many ways, Rola Tabsh is a pioneer. She is daring to be a Sunni MP, and an unveiled one for that, in a patriarchal and narrow-minded society. She just found out, the easy way perhaps, that her road will be filled with landmines.
For that, I salute her. Despite her later apologies, Rola Tabsh dared to build bridges. She dared, even if for a moment, to behave like a MP for the entire nation rather than her sect.

أغضبت النائب المنتخب حديثا رولا الطبش المقترعين السنّة عندما شاركت في قداس عيد الميلاد، وكما نرى في الصورة أدناه، تقدمت وأخذت البركة من كأس الأفخارستيا. لم تتناول – ونتساءل هنا لو كانت ذكرا هل كانت ستتلقى نفس ردة الفعل؟ شاهد تقرير عما حدث هنا
تداركت الأمر وزارت دار الفتوى حيث سمعت محاضرة عن شرائع الإسلام، اعتذرت من رجال الدين، ومن ثم اعتذرت من الله على غلطتها
هذه حادثة غنية جدا. بإمكان المرء أن يتكلم عن التعدديّة الدينية، المائدة المقدسة، النسويّة، ومواضيع أخرى كثيرة
لا أريد أن اخذ موقف من أفعال السلطات الدينية السنيّة. أتفهم ردة فعلهم. يؤمنون أن الإسلام هو الطريق لله مثلما أؤمن أنا أن المسيح هو الطريق لله. انزعجوا من رؤية أحد أفراد جماعتهم يشارك في طقس مسيحي. أتفهم الأمر
أيضا لا اريد الغوص في مسألة “التعددية” في لبنان. أنا ممتن بأننا في آخر 28 سنة بشكل عام توقفنا عن قتل بعضنا البعض. هل نعيش حقا في تعددية؟ ماذا عن أولئك الذين لا يريدون التديّن بينما كل قوانين الأحوال الشخصية عندنا طائفية؟ ماذا عن الزواج المدني؟ ماذا عن الذين يريدون اتباع دين غير المسيحية أو الإسلام؟ هل لهؤلاء مكان بيننا؟
ولكن أريد أن أعلق على موضوع الأفخارستيا
لمن لا يعلم، الافخارستيا هو طقس مسيحي أسسه المسيح بنفسه. يتناول المسيحيون قطعة خبز وبعض النبيذ (قلة من الكنائس تستخدم عصير العنب) ليتذكروا موت المسيح على الصليب – الخبز هو جسده المكسور لأجلنا والكأس هو دمه المسفوك لأجلنا
تؤمن بعض الكنائس بأن الخبز والخمر يتحولان إلى جسد ودم المسيح. بينما يعتبر آخرون أنهما مجرد رمز
السؤال المفصلي في آخر عشر سنين، على الأقل بين الكنائس الإنجيلية، لم يكن حول طبيعة العناصر بل حول من يحق له المشاركة. تؤمن بعض الكنائس أنه فقط يحق لأعضائها التناول. يأخذ البعض موقف أخف ويقولون أن فقط المسيحيين الحقيقيين يحق لهم التناول (كيف تعرف الحقيقي؟ هذه قصة أخرى). ويؤمن آخرون بأن الجميع مرحّب بهم طالما يعلمون ماذا يفعلون
يتفق كل المسيحيون، على الأقل، أن هذه مائدة يسوع. يسوع هو المضيف في هذا العمل. هذه طاولته. لا أرى كيف يمكن ليسوع أن يغضب عند رؤية امراة مسلمة تتقدم من الطاولة. نعم، هي لم تتناول، ولكن لو كانت تناولت، لا أعتقد أنها كانت ستكون ملعونة أو تنجس الكنيسة أو أي شيء من هذا القبيل

من المؤسف أنها اعتذرت من الله لأن اعتذارها منه يصوره على أنه إله ضيق الأفق ينزعج منها عند اشتراكها في احتفالات مجموعة مختلفة. من هو هذا الإله الذي ينزعج من الطقوس؟
الله الذي أعرفه ينزعج من الظلم والكراهية والإستبداد. الله الذي أعرفه أكبر من ديني وطقوسي
حادثة رولا الطبش ذكّرتنا بأننا نعيش في بلد هشّ ولكن غنيّ. رولا الطبش رائدت على أكثر من صعيد. إنها تتجرأ أن تكون نائب سنيّ، وغير محجّبة، في مجتمع ذكوري ومتصلب الرأي. ولقد وجدت، بسهولة هذه المرة، أن طريقها مليئة بالألغام
