Christmas is a celebration of loss.
Yes, I know we gain gifts (socks anyone?), gain weight, and gain endless traffic.
But, essentially, Christmas is a celebration of loss.
God emptied himself. He lost everything. He became one of us, a mere human, a poor jewish carpenter nobody human: Jesus.
The picture of God we usually have is one who gains. It is a picture of a God who is full of glory and power, and who demands that all people worship him.
In Jesus, we have a God who empties himself.
As the apostle Paul puts it, Jesus emptied himself, took on the form of a slave (not a king or a soldier) and even went till the end, till death (Philippians 2).
In Jesus, God emptied himself of all glory, power, and at the end even life.
In Jesus, God lost everything. God became a loser.
So, what do we celebrate in Christmas, we celebrate having a God who understands what it means to have nothing, because many times we also are weak humans who have nothing. God understands. Not only that, God is one of us, he is among us.
So, this Christmas, I want to be really like the Christ I am celebrating. I want to become a loser this Christmas!
Starting Monday 14 December, and till Friday December 25 (12 days) I will empty myself of something, 12 “somethings” to be exact.
No, I will not “buy” a gift for anyone. I will pick something from my personal belonging, something I VALUE, and give it away. One thing per day for 12 days. As simple as that.
In Christmas God lost his glory because he loves us. This Christmas I want to imitate my God.
So, I challenge you this Christmas to empty yourself. Take the challenge with me. Give away one item of your personal valuable belongings for 12 days. It could be part of your salary, your favourite jacket, precious book, or that jeans you wear every day. It should be something you will miss, something which will hurt, so you will remember that Christmas is about God emptying himself for us.

ولكن عيد الميلاد، في جوهره، هو احتفال بالخسارة
الله أخلى، أفرغ، نفسه. خسر كل شيء صار واحد منا، إنسان عادي، يهودي فقير ونجار ، إنسان غير مهم: يسوع
الصورة النمطية التي لدينا عن الله هي الإله الذي يكسب. هي صورة لإله مملوء بالمجد والقوة، ويطلب العبادة من كل البشر
في يسوع لدينا إله يخلي ويفرغ نفسه
وكما يقول الرسول بولس، المسيح أخلى نفسه، أخذ صورة اعبد (ليس ملك أو جندي) وذهب حتى الموت- فيلبي 2
في يسوع الله أخلى نفسه من كل القوة والمجد وفي النهاية حتى من الحياة
في يسوع، الله خسر كل شيء. أصبح خاسرا
إذا، ما الذي نحتفل به في الميلاد،نحتفل بأنه لدينا إله يفهمنا ويفهم معنى أن لا نمتلك شيئا، لأننا في الكثير من الأحيان نشعر بأننا بشر ضعفاء ليس لديهم شيء. الله يفهم علينا. ليس فقط هذا، بل الله بيننا
إذا، هذا الميلاد، أريد أن أكون حقا مثل الإله الذي أحتفل به. أريد أن أصبح خاسر هذا الميلاد
ابتداءا من الإثنين 12 ديسمبر وحتى الجمعة 25 ديسمبر (كانون الأول) سوف أخلي نفسي من 12 شيئا
كلا، لن “أشتري” هدية لأحدهم بل سأختار شيئا من ممتلكاتي الشخصية، شيء ثمين لدي وسأعطيه لأحدهم. أمر واحد يوميا لمدة 12 يوم. بهذه البساطة
في الميلاد، الله خسر مجده لأنه يحبنا. هذا الميلاد أريد أن أشبه إلهي
إذا، أنا أتحداكم هذا الميلاد أن تخلوا أنفسكم. خذوا التحدي معي. أعطوا شيئا من ممتلكاتكم الشخصية لمدة 12 يوم. قد يكون جزء من معاشك أو سترتك المفضلة أو كتابك الثمين أو ذلك الجينز اذي تلبسه يوميا. يجب أن يكون شيء ستشتاق إليه، شيء يوجعك، لكي تتذكر أن الميلاد هو حول الله الذي يخلي ويفرغ نفسه من أجلنا
