Last Monday Mustafa Sbeity, a 65-year-old poet who has written more than 10 books, insulted the virgin Mary in a Facebook status. He has since deleted the status and apologized. He is currently in custody and under investigation for charges of blasphemy and encouraging sectarianism. He is also a Muslim.
Social media has erupted over the past few days. Many Christian voices, prominent and unknown, have called for the severest punishment possible for Sbeity. Some Christians have even resorted to cursing him and his family.
I am a Christian.
I love Jesus.
But, I do not think that Sbeity should be in jail.
Yes, what he said does not aid in the building of Christian-Muslim relationships in Lebanon.
However, free speech is free speech.
If I want the freedom to proclaim Jesus as God, then I should also accept that others will have the freedom to insult my God. We either have free speech or we don’t.
Who decides what goes and what doesn’t on social media? Over the past couple of years in Lebanon, we have seen many people placed in jail over a Facebook status. Some were charged for “insulting the president,” others for “insulting the flag,” and now for insulting religious icons. Perhaps tomorrow I will write something which someone else finds insulting. Should I be placed in Jail? (Maybe you think I should be jailed for defending Sbeity 😉
Do we want a country where authority figures (presidents, symbols, gods) cannot be criticized and mocked?
Will putting Sbeity in prison make him like Jesus? Will it ease the burning hatred between Muslims and Christians in Lebanon?
Let us be honest with each other. The problem is not Mustafa Sbeity with his sarcastic Facebook status. The problem is that there is a deep mistrust between the Muslim and Christian communities. The problem is that Christians are refusing to be Christ-like, and are resorting to curses (and perhaps in the future violence) to “defend their honour.” The problem is that the Lebanese people are not moved to anger when our politicians blatantly steal our rights to clean air, clean roads, affordable housing, secure living, and just about every possible human need, but we are moved to rage when someone insults our God!
I am a Christian. I am in love with Jesus! Mustafa Sbeity’s Facebook post bothers me. I find it repulsive. But it does not move me to anger. If I ever get to meet Sbeity, I will greet him as a friend.
Mustafa Sbeity, you will probably never read this, but here it goes anyway: I forgive you for what you wrote about Jesus and the virgin Mary. I hope that one day you will get to know Jesus better. I also respect your right to hate my God and make fun of him. You do not deserve to be in jail.

دفاع عن مصفى سبيتي
الإثنين الماضي أهان مصطفى سبيتي، الشاعر الذي عمره 65 الذي كتب أكثر من 10 كتب، مريم العذراء في ستاتوس على فايسبوك. ثم عاد ومحى الستاتوس واعتذر. هو حاليا محجوز ويخضع للتحقيق بتهم التجديف والتشجيع على الطائفية. هو مسلم
في الأيام الماضية انفجرت وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي حيث علت عدة أصوات مسيحية، مرموقة وشعبية، داعية لإنزال أقصى العقوبات بسبيتي. وقد قام بعض المسيحيون بشتمه وشتم عائلته

نعم، لا أعتقد أن الذي قاله يساعد في بناء العلاقات المسيحية-الإسلامية في لبنان ولكن حرية الراي هي حرية الراي
إذا كنت أريد الحرية لأعلن أن يسوع هو الله فيجب أن أقبل أن لدى الآخرين الحرية بإهانة إلهي. إما يكون لدينا حرية الرأي أو لا يكون
ثم يقرر ما هو مسموح به على وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي؟ في السنوات القليلة الماضية في لبنان رأينا عدد من الأشخاص يوضعون في الحبس بسبب ستاتوس على فايسبوك. اتُّهم البعض بـ “إهانة رئيس الجمهورية” أو “إهانة العلم” والأن إهانة الرموز الدينية. لربما أكتب أنا غدا أمرا ما ويجده أحدهم مهينا. هل يجب أن أُزجّ في الحبس؟ قد يكون البعض الأن يود وضعي في الحبس بسبب هذه المدونة
هل نريد بلد ممنوع فيه الانتقاد أو السخرية من رموز السلطة – الرؤساء والآلهة؟
هل وضع سبيتي في الحبس سيجعله يحب يسوع؟ هل سيخفف من الكراهية المستعرة بين المسلمين والمسيحيين في لبنان؟
دعونا نكون شفافين مع أنفسنا ونعترف أن المشكلة ليست في مصطفى سبيتي والستاتوس الساخر. المشكلة هي الشك العميق المتبادل بين المجتمعات المسيحية والمسلمة. المشكلة هي رفض المسيحيين أن يكونوا على شبه المسيح وانقيادهم نحو الشتائم (وربما لاحقا العنف) لـ”يدافعوا عن شرفهم.” المشكلة أن الشعب اللبناني لم يتحرك غضبا من السرقة الوقحة من قبل سياسينا لحقنا بالهواء النظيف والطرقات النظيفة والسكن المقبول والعيش الآمن وتقريبا كل الحاجات الإنسانية، وها هو يستشيط غيظا عندما يهين أحدهم الله!
أنا مسيحي. أنا مغروم بيسوع! وستاتوس مصطفى سبيتي يزعجني. أجده مقززا. ولكنه لا يغضبني. وإذا شاءت الصدف أن ألتقي بمصفى سبيتي يوما ما فسأسلم عليه كصديق
يا مصطفى سبيتي، وانا أعرف أنك على الأرجح لن تقرأ هذه الكلمات، ولكن أقول لك أنني أسامحك على ما كتبته عن يسوع والعذراء مريم. أتمنى يوما ما أن تتعرف على يسوع بشكل أفضل. أحترم حقك بكره إلهي والسخرية منه. لا تستحق أن تكون في الحبس
