ISIS are arguably the most famous terrorist group on the planet at the moment. They also claim to be Muslim. That point has moved many Muslims worldwide to denounce ISIS. Some Christians have taken this opportunity to attack Islam and accuse it of being a terror-breeding religion.
This post is not to defend Islam. I am in no position to do that. Rather, this post is to point to a certain phenomenon in the Christian world, and particularly in Lebanon, which is very similar to ISIS.
Who is the Christian ISIS? I think I found it yesterday while spending some quality time with my Facebook feeds.
داعش هي الجماعة الإرهابية الأولى في العالم في هذه الأيام. هي أيضا تدعي الإسلام. هذه النقطة دفعت كثير من المسلمين لرفض والتبري من داعش. بعض المسيحيين استغلوا هذه الفرصة ليتهجموا على الإسلام ويتهموه بأنه دين يربي الإرهاب. لا أكتب هذه المدونة لأدافع عن الإسلام، فأنا لست مسؤولا عن هذا الأمر. بل أكتب هذه المدونة لأدل على ظاهرة معينة في العالم المسيحي، وخاصة في لبنان، مشابهة لداعش. من هي داعش المسيحية؟ اعتقد أنني وجدتها البارحة بينما كنت أمضي بعض الوقت النوعي في تصفح الفايسبوك
There is a Facebook page called “The Lebanese Reformer” which claims to study all the aspects of Lebanon under the eye of the Bible. Also, as the name shows, the anonymous author claims to be a reformer of the Christian faith in Lebanon. Here is a sample of what you might find on the page itself:
هناك صفحة على فايسبوك تدعى “المصلح اللبناني” وتدعي أنها ستدرس كل نواحي المجتمع اللبناني تحت مجهر الكتاب المقدس. وكذلك، كما هو واضح من الإسم، الكاتب المجهول يدعي أنه مصلح للإيمان المسيحي في لبنان. وهذه عينة من ما قد تجدونه على الصفحة
1- Attacks on prominent local and worldwide Christian figures
أولا: هجوم على قادة مسيحيين محليين وعالميين بارزين

For instance in the above post s/he (although it is probably a he) calls four main Egyptian Christian leaders, the leader of the entire Roman Catholic church (who is, by the way, a refreshing image of Christ in this world) and two prominent American preachers heretics, false prophets, and servants of Satan. He quotes John 10: 4-5. He then gives us the recipe to how he got to this daring conclusion: You have to be born from God to be able to discern them and their deathly teachings.
So, according to this post, because I think the pope is a man of God then I am not born from God, so I am not a Christian. Now, just to be clear, I am not saying that I agree with all the teachings of these figures in the post. But, by what authority can someone deem a Christian leader a heretic? Who says that my leader is not a heretic too? Let us then start calling each other heretics. Why not start killing each other, and burning people we disagree with to the stake (something Christians only stopped doing very recently)?
Does a difference in interpretation of the Bible mean that the other person is a heretic, a non-Christian, and the servant of the devil?
مثلا، في البوست أعلاه يسمي صاحبنا (وهو على الاغلب رجل وليس امرأة) 4 قادة مسيحيين مصريين، قائد الكنيسة الكاثوليكية جمعاء (وهو، بالمناسبة، صورة منعشة للمسيح في هذا العالم)، واثنين من الوعاظ الأمريكان البارزين هراطقة، انبياء كذبة، وخدام ابليس. ويعطينا الطريقة التي من خلالها اكتشف هذا الاكتشاف الجريئ: هو مولود من الله لذا يقدر أن يميز تعاليمهم القاتلة. إذا، بحسب هذا البوست، لأنني أعتقد أن البابا هو رجل الله أنا لست مولودا من الله ولست مسيحيا. للتوضيح أقول أنني لا أتفق مع كل ما يعلمه هؤلاء القادة في الصورة ولكن بأي سلطان يستطيع أحدهم أن يقول عن قائد مسيحي أنه مهرطق؟ لما لا نقول أن قائدي أيضا مهرطق؟ دعونا اذا نبدأ بتكفير بعضنا البعض. ولما لا نبدأ أيضا بقتل وحرق كل من لا يوافق على آرائنا اللاهوتية – وهو أمر توقف عن فعله المسيحيين في الآونة الأخيرة فقط؟
هل الإختلاف في تفسير الكتاب المقدس يعني أن الشخص الآخر مهرطق وغير مسيحي وخادم لإبليس؟

In the above post our dear reformer attacks a prominent Lebanese pastor and Christian singer because he does not like one sentence of his lyrics. The sentence reads “God wore a body and came to our earth,” and our friends quotes John 1: 14 in refutation.
Notice the ISIS-like thinking: you have to speak the same language as me or you are not a true Christian.

In our final example in this section, the Lebanese Reformer attacks the best Evangelical (and dare I say, Arab) theologian of our age, Dr. Ghassan Khalaf. He attacks Khalaf’s teaching that the human being has a role in salvation, because if it weren’t for that then God would have no right to condemn humanity. The Reformer then adds, perhaps projecting his own way of thinking “Nobody can argue with me! I have a PhD!”
I have known Dr. Khalaf since I was born and if anyone is humble on the face of this proud earth, it is him. He would never ask someone not to argue with him because he has a PhD. Again, the Reformer retorts by quoting two verses (Romans 9: 16 and John 1:13). The funny thing is that we can play the verse game all day from the Bible. Every single one of the 20,000+ Christian denominations, sects, groups, and organizations quote verses. The Bible is full of verses and each group can find one to its linking.
في المثال الأخير في هذا القسم يتهجم المصلح اللبناني على أفضل لاهوتي إنجيلي، أوحتى عربي، في عصرنا، الدكتور غسان خلف. ويزيد على الفكرة التي يقتبسها من د. خلف جملة من نسج خياله، وربما تعبر عن طريقة المصلح في التعاطي مع الإختلاف في الرأي، إذ يتخيل أن د. خلف يرفض أي اختلاف ويختبئ وراء الدكتواه. أنا أعرفه منذ أن ولدت وإذا كان يوجد انسان متواضع على هذه الأرض المتكبرة فهو الدكتور غسان خلف. وأيضا المصلح يقتبس آيتين للدفاع عن رأيه. والأمر المضحك أنه بإمكاننا اقتباس الآيات بما لا نهاية من الكتاب المقدس. كل واحد من الطوائف والجماعات والحركات المسيحية التي يفوق عددها الـ20،000 تقتبس الآيات. الكتاب المقدس مليئ بالآيات ونستطيع أن نجد ما يحلو لنا ويبرهن نظرياتنا اللاهوتية
2- Attacks on Christian doctrines that are different from his own
ثانيا: التهجم على العقائد المسيحية المختلفة عن عقيدته

In the above post, our reformer quotes 2 Corinthians 11: 14 beside the picture of the Virgin Mary, claiming that all appearances of Mary are of the devil. He also accuses people in the hashtags of being worshipers of Mary. Now, personally, I do not agree with all that goes on in terms of the theology of Mary in the Catholic Church, but to name the appearances of Mary as those of the devil is taking it too far. Perhaps some of the people are faithful followers of Christ who also turn to Mary as an image of God’s love?
في البوست أعلاه، يدعي المصلح أن كل ظهورات مريم العذراء هي ظهورات لإبليس. وأيضا يتهم الناس بأنهم يعبدون مريم. شخصيا أنا لا أوافق على كثير مما يجري في لاهوت مريم في الكنيسة الكاثوليكية، ولكن أن نسمي ظهورات مريم بأنها ظهورات شيطانية أمر زائد عن اللزوم. ربما بعض الناس هم أتباع أمناء للمسيح وأيضا يلتفتون لمريم كصزرة عن محبة الله؟

In the above post, our friendly reformer argues that child baptism is right and re-baptism for adults is heresy. Again, he accuses hundreds of thousands of committed Christians of being heretics just because they do not follow his way of thinking. Is he not aware that his way was argued also by people? Who said that his theologians are smarter than the others? The word of God? Well, the others also use the Bible…
يقول هنا المصلح بأن كل من لا يؤمن بضرورة تعميد أولاد المسيحيين ليس مصلَحا. ويسمي الأنابابتيست ، من يطلبون إعادة المعمودية عند الكبر، هراطقة. مرة جديدة هو يتهم الآلاف من المسيحيين الملتزمين بأنهم هراطقة وفقط لأنهم لا يتبعون طريقته في التفكير. هل هو واع بأن طريقته هي أيصا نتاج تفكير بشر؟ من قال أن اللاهوتيين الذين يتبعهم هم أذكى من اللاهوتيين الذين يتبعهم الآخرين؟ كلمة الرب؟ حسنا، الآخرين أيضا يستخدمون الكتاب المقدس

In the above and final example, the reformer attacks Arminianism by distorting a number of famous verses and claiming that Arminians say that good people are saved by their own works. In a nutshell, the two main thought-groups in the Protestant world are Arminianism, who believe in free-will, and Calvinism, who believe in predestination, or that all the work of salvation is God’s work and humans have no role. I am aware that this is a serious over-simplification but please go online and read if you want to know more.
Again, the Lebanese Reformer mocks more the theology of more than half the Protestant Christians and a large portion of the Christians generally.
في هذا المثال الأخير يشوه المصلح الفكر الأرميني ويدعي أن الأرمينيين يؤمنون بأن الخلاص هو بالأعمال الصالحة. باختصار شديد، هناك فريقان أساسيان في ما يخص اللاهوت الإنجيلي: الأرمينيون يؤمنون بالإرادة الحرة بينما الكالفينيون يؤمنون بالإختيار المسبق من الله وأن عمل الخلاص كليا من الله ولا وجود لدور للإنسان. أنا أعرف أن هذا تبسيط مجحف ولكن من يريد أن يعرف أكثر فعليه باللجوء للشبكة العنكوبوتية لقرائة المزيد
مرة جديدة، المصلح اللبناني يسخر من لاهوت أكثر من نصف الإنجيليين وأيضا جزء كبير من المسيحيين بشكل عام
Why is the Lebanese Reformer the Christian version of ISIS? The answer is very simple: he refuses all people and ideas that differ, even if slightly, from his own. Now that is fine, really, because we all filter the ideas we hear and choose to accept or reject them. What is dangerous is that he claims that all those people who THINK or BELIEVE differently than him are not true Christians. They are heretics and lost.
I have a feeling that if it were still possible, the Lebanese Reformer would have liked to kill all the Christian leaders whom he sees as servants of the devil.
لما المصلح اللبناني هو النسخة المسيحية عن داعش؟ الجواب بسيط: لأنه يرفض كل الأشخاص والأفكار التي تختلف، ولو بشكل صغير، عن أفكاره. وهذا أمر مقبول لأننا كلنا نرفض ونقبل الأفكار التي تعترض طريقنا. ولكن الخطير هو ادعاءه بأن كل من يفكر أو يؤمن بطريقة مختلفة عنه ليس مسيحيا حقيقيا بل مهرطق وفاسد وضائع
عندي شعور بأن لو كان ممكنا لقتل المصلح اللبناني كل القادة المسيحيين الذين يراهم هو بأنهم خدام ابليس
So, I end with a few questions directed to the Lebanese Reformer and all the Christian ISIS-like thinkers out there:
1- Do you believe that you are the only ones who are true Christians? What about the millions of Christians who think differently than you? Are they all damned to hell?
2- Can you list weak points in your theology? Are there points on which you do not agree with the reformation leaders? Or is your theology perfect? Are you aware that the leaders of the reformation themselves had theological differences?
3- What makes your interpretation of the Bible the right one? Who said that the interpretation of other Christians is wrong? Logic? Reason? Experience? Did God appear to you personally?
أنهي المدونة ببعض الأسئلة للمصلح اللبناني كما وكل من يتبع هذا النهج الفكري المسيحي المشابه لداعش
أولا، هل تؤمن بأنك المسيحي الحقيقي الوحيد؟ ماذا عن الملايين من المسيحيين الذين يختلفون معك فكريا ولاهوتيا؟ هل كلهم ذاهبون للجحيم؟
ثانيا، هل تستطيع أن تعدد نقاط الضعف في لاهوتك؟ هل هناك نقاط لا تتفق فيها مع قادة الإصلاح؟ أو هل لاهوتك كامل؟ هل تعرف أن قادة الإصلاح أنفسهم كان لديهم اختلافات لاهوتية؟
ثالثا، ما الذي يجعل تفسيرك للكتاب المقدس صائب؟ من قال أن تفسير المسيحيين الآخرين خطأ؟ المنطق؟ الحجة؟ الإختبار؟ هل ظهر لك الله شخصيا؟
