A few days ago I was sitting with a group of teachers from the school in a monastery in one of the villages of in the south of Lebanon. We were sitting in a circle around one of the main monks there. He had a long beard, loving face, and was speaking words of wisdom. He then distributed a Bible reading and asked the senior male teacher of the group to read. He did not have his reading eyeglasses, so some of us suggested that another teacher read – and she happened to be a female. The monk refused, and said that he wanted a male to read the Gospel.
It is the end of July, again, coincidently, in the south of Lebanon. A local marathon is running and the municipality bans females from signing up to participate in the race since he does not want females running with males (excuse me for not posting a link to the news article – I did not find it in English. I do have the Arabic link in the translated blog below).
It is the year 2016 and in Lebanon women still cannot give the Lebanese passport to their children. I have many friends who are born of a Lebanese mother and a non-Lebanese father, who have lived all their lives in Lebanon, but who do not have a Lebanese ID and have minimal rights and protection in the Lebanese state.
I have been married for a month and a half now, and many of the well-wishers wished us a male child (ne2sha3elkon 3aris – “we hope we see you pregnant with a groom”).
In a moving passage in the Jewish Bible (Old Testament/Torah), the prophet Joel speaks of a time when God will pour out His spirit on everyone, and boys, girls, old, young, and even female and male slaves will prophesy, that is, speak the word of God (Joel 2: 28-29). Christians understand that this vision as coming to completion in Christ when all people through him became children of God.
Yet, in our churches today, only the males can speak, and the women are silent.
When will the vision of Joel come to pass?
When will we begin to use our spiritual documents as sources of liberation, love, freedom, and advancement rather than oppression, hate, bondage, and backward thinking?
Will the women in the churches, mosques, Lebanon, ever become humans in our eyes?
Let us stand in prayer:
Lord,
Forgive us,
You created us male and female:
Both,
Together,
In your image,
Amen

قبل بضعة أيام كنت جالسا مع مجموعة من المعلمات والمعلمين من مدرستي في أحد الأديرة في أحد قرى الجنوب. وكنا جالسين في دائرة حول راهب ملتحي، ذو وجه جميل وكلام عذب حكيم. من ثم وزع علينا قراءة من الإنجيل وطلب من أكبر الذكور بيننا أن يقرأ. ولكن الأستاذ المذكور لم يكن يحمل نظارات القراءة، فاقترحنا أن تقرأ النص احدى المعلمات. ولكن الراهب رفض الأمر وقال أنه يريد من أحد الذكور أن يقرأ الإنجيل
في هاية تموز، مرة أخرى للأسف أيضا في أحد قرى الجنوب، تنظم البلديات ماراثون محلي ويصدررئيس البلدية أمرا بمنع الإناث من التسجيل لمنع الإختلاط بين الذكور والإناث
انها سنة 2016 وفي لبنان لا زالت المرأة لا تستطيع أن تعطي الجنسية لأولادها. لدي كثير من الأصدقاء الذين ولدوا لأم لبنانية وأب غير لبناني وعاشوا كل حياتهم في لبنان، ولكن لا يمتلكون هوية لبنانية ولا حقوق مدنية وحماية من القانون في وطنهم لبنان
لقد مضى على زواجي شهر ونصف وكثير من المباركين لنا طلبوا من الله أن يرسل لنا طفل ذكر وليس انثى – نقشعلكم عريس
في أحد المقاطع الجميلة في الكتاب المقدس اليهدي (العهد القديم أو التوراة) يتكلم النبي يوئيل عن زمن سيسكب فيه الله روحه على الجميع، البنات والصبيان، البار والصغار، وحتى على العبيد الإناث والذكور، والكل سيتنبأ، أي سيتكلم بكلام الله (يوئيل 2: 28-29). المسيحيون يفهمون هذا المقطع على أنه تحقق بمجيئ المسيح يث أصبح لجميع دخول لعائلة الله من خلال المسيح
ولكن، في كنائسنا اليوم، فقط الذكور يستطيعون الكلام والنساء صامتات
متى سيتحقق حلم يوئيل؟
متى سنبدأ باستخدام كتبنا الروحية كوسيلة للتحرر، المحبة، الحرية، والتقدم وليس كوسيلة للقمع، الكره، العبودية، والتفكير الرجعي؟
هل ستصبح النساء في كنائسنا وجوامعنا ووطننا لبنان بشرا؟
