يحلو للكنيسة في هذا العيد تذكيرنا باستمرار وفي كل الإجتماعات وبمختلف الطرق بأن معنى العيد هو يسوع. وهذا صحيح، ولكن الإعتقاد بأن قصص ميلاد يسوع في متى ولوقا متعلّقة فقط بمحبّة الله للبشر على مستوى شخصي للخلاص من الخطيّة الفردية هو اعتقاد منقوص. ربما نحتاج للنظر بعيون سياسية لقصة الميلاد علّنا نفهمها كما فهتها الكنيسة الأولى، تلك الجماعة الصغيرة في القرن الأول المكوّنة من يهود ويونانيين والتي ادّعت، في وجه أعتى قوة عسكرية وسياسية واجتماعية ذلك الزمان، بأن ربّ الكون ليس امبراطور روما الذي جلب السلام بالحرب للعالم بل معلّم يهودي صلبته روما وأقامه الله من الموت
الذي يتبع ليس تحليل شامل لكل شخصيات وأحداث قصص الميلاد في العهد الجديد، بل نظرة سريعة على بعض العناصر التي تحمل معاني سياسية. وبكل صراحة، المعنى السياسي واضح وظاهر لكل من يعرف بعض الشيء عن واقع الحال في فلسطين في القرن الأول ميلادي. لذا، لا أحتاج للتفتيش في كل شاردة وواردة لأجد معنى سياسي دفين، بل الواقع المتفجّر لقصة الميلاد يقفز للقارئ من على الصفحة
أبدأ بشخصية مريم، تلك الفتاة من الجليل التي سُمّيت على إسم أميرة قتلها هيرودس الكبير، حاكم اليهودية في ذلك الزمان، وقد كان من أشرس الملوك الذين مرّوا على اليهود، فقتل كثير من أفراد عائلته وكل من تجرّأ على تحدّي حكمه. وتلك الفتاة الفقيرة نفسها هي التي يخبرنا لوقا أنّها سبّحت الله عند لقائها أليصابات بكلمات جريئة جدا، إذ ترنّم بأن الذي يفعله الله بمجيء المسيا سيُنزل الأعزّاء عن الكراسي وسيصرف الأغنياء فارغين (لوقا 1). والأعزّاء الجالسين على الكراسي والأغنياء في ذلك الزمن هم الملوك والحكّام وصولا للإمبراطور. لوقا يصر على تذكيرنا بسياق القصة بقوله في 1: 5 أن القصة تتم في أيام هيرودس وثم في 2: 1 أن القصة تتم في زمن الإمبراطور أوغسطس قيصر. إذا، لوقا يضع تسبيحة مريم وأحداث الميلاد في هذا الإطار السياسي الظالم بحق اليهود، وخاصة الفقراء منهم، في ذلك الزمن. وبالطبع، الكنيسة في نهاية القرن الأول التي تسمع قصة لوقا وضها ليس أفضل، بل هي تواجه اضّطهاد ومقاومة من عدة جهات رومانية ويهودية سلطوية
وحتى اللغة التي تُستخدم لوصف يسوع نفسه هي لغة سياسية محمومة في ذلك الزمان. فالملاك في لوقا يقول لمريم أن المولود سيكون ملك على عرش داود وسيملك على شعب إسرائيل (الذي في لوقا يضم اليهود والأمم غير اليهود) إلى الأبد. والملائكة الذين بشّروا الرعاة، والذي بحد ذاته حدث سياسي فريد إذ تختار السماء تبشير المهمّشين وليس الأغنياء والحكّام، وصفوا يسوع بالمخلّص وكانت هذه الصفة متعلّقة بالإمبراطور الروماني. وثم غنّوا معلنين السلام على الأرض وكان شعار روما بأنها جلبت السلام على الأرض من خلال الحرب. وها السماء تعلن أن السلام يأتي من خلال طفل ضعيف. وأيضا سمعان الشيخ عندما التقى بيسوع وصفه بخلاص لكل الشعوب وليس فقط لليهود. إذا، وصف يسوع وصف ملوكي، وفي سياق القرن الأول، هذا الوصف لا يليق إلا بالإمبراطور. فكأن بلوقا والكنيسة الأولى تدّعي بأن معلّمها اليهودي الذي وُلد طفل فقير في منطقة مهمّشة من الإمبراطورية هو المخلص وجالب السلام وربّ الشعوب وليس روما وأدواتها الحربية
وأخيرا، مع أنه يمكن التوسّع أكثر في الموضوع، يلفتني أن المجوس حين جاؤوا لزيارة الطفل مرّوا أولا على الملك هيرودس، الممثل الشرعي الوحيد للإمبرياليّة الرومانية. ولكنهم لم يجدوا الملك هناك. فأكملوا طريقهم صوب يسوع. وكأن بمتى يقول بطريقة أدبية أن ثقل الحكم العالمي انتقل من هيرودس القوي، ووراؤه روما الجبّارة، إلى ذلك الطفل الضعيف. وملفت أكثر لنا أن الأنبياء في العهد القديم توقّعوا أن مجيء المسيا سيدفع بالأمم للمجيء لعبادة الله في أورشليم. ولكن الأمم (المجوس) لم يجدوا ما يفتّشون عنه في الهيكل اليهودي بل وجدوه في يسوع نفسه. يسوع الهيكل الجديد وثقل الحكم اليهودي يقع في جسده وليس في مركز الحكم المادي في أورشليم
إذا نعم، عيد الميلاد عيد المحبّة والعطاء وبرهان حب الله للبشرية, ولكنه أكثر بكثير من ذلك. أقلّه، هذا ما يدّعيه متى ولوقا والكنيسة الأولى، إذ رؤوا في مجيء يسوع تبدّل لمركز الحكم من جيوش الأرض إلى يسوع نفسه. ورؤوا في مجيء يسوع تبدّل في الأوضاع الإجتماعية والإقتصادية من سيطرة الغني على الفقير إلى خلاص للفقراء وتتميم للوعود بملك يحكم أمم الأرض بالعدل. هذا كلّه “معنى الميلاد الحقيق” وليس أقل من ذلك
أين يحدث هذا؟ كيف؟ يجب أن تأتي الإجابة من الأفراد والجماعات الذين يدّعون أنهم أتباع ذلك الطفل الملك. هل نحيا بحسب ملكوت عادل للفقراء؟ هل ربّنا يسوع أو امبراطوريات هذا العالم؟ ماذا يعني أن نكون شعب “محبة” للفقير والمهمّش؟ هل نلهث وراء السلطة أم نغنّي مع مريم، لقد نزل الزعماء عن الكراسي وارتفع المتواضعين؟
دعونا نقف لنصلّي

The church goes to great lengths to remind us constantly in every meeting and in every possible way that the meaning of Christmas is Jesus. That is true, but the belief that the Christmas stories in Matthew and Luke are about God’s love to humanity on a personal level to save people individually form sin lacks in depth. Perhaps we need to re-look at the Christmas story with political eyes that we might understand it as the first church did – that small group of first century Jews and Greeks who claimed, in the face of greatest military, political, and social super power of the time, that the lord of the heavens and earth is not the Roman emperor who brings peace to the world through war but a Jewish teacher whom Rome crucified and God raised from the dead.
What follows is not a comprehensive analysis of all the characters and events of the Christmas stories in the New Testament, but I present a quick look at some of the elements that hold political meaning. In all honesty, the political meaning is obvious for anyone who has a basic knowledge of the state of affairs in first century CE Palestine. Hence, I did not need to sift through every small detail to find a hidden political meaning. On the other hand, the explosive nature of the Christmas story jumps out at the reader from the pages.
I begin with Mary. She was a girl from Galilee named after a princess that Herod the great had killed. Herd ruled the area with an iron fist. He killed many members of his family and countless citizens who dared oppose him. That same poor girl sings in Luke when meeting Elizabeth that what God is doing in sending the Messiah will bring down the mighty from their thrones and send away the rich empty. The mighty ones and rich of those times were the rulers all the way up to the emperor. Luke makes it a point to remind us of the context of the story by saying in 1: 5 that Herod was ruler and then in 2:1 that Caesar Augustus was emperor. Hence, Luke is placing Mary’s praise and the events of Christmas within this general oppressive political climate towards the Jews, especially the poor. Needless to say, the church listening to the story of Luke towards the end of the first century was not in better shape but was faced with persecution and opposition from varied Roman and Jewish leaders
Even the language used to describe Jesus himself is loaded politically in that time. The angel in Luke tells Mary that the baby will be a king on the throne of David, and that he will rule over Israel (in Luke that includes both Jews and gentiles) forever. The angels who told the shepherds about Jesus – in itself a unique political event as heaven chooses to tell the news to the marginalized rather than the rich or the ruling elite – described Jesus as the savior, a title reserved or the Roman emperor. They then sang declaring peace on earth which was the Roman moto. Rome claimed to have brought peace through war, and here the heavens declare that peace comes through a weak child. Simon too described Jesus as salvation to all people and not just the Jews. Hence, Jesus is given imperial titles which in the context of the first century were reserved to the emperor. It is as if Luke and the early church are claiming that their Jewish teacher, born as a poor child in a marginalized area of the empire, is the savior, bringer of peace, and the lord of all the nations and not Rome or its military machine.
Finally, although much more can be said on this subject, Matthew weaves a masterful telling of the coming of the Magi to visit the baby, whereby they seek first Herod, the rightful and only representative of the imperial Rome. But they do not find the king there. They then move on towards Jesus. It is as if Matthew is saying in a narrative manner that the epicenter of the world super power has moved from Herod the great, behind who stands the mighty Rome, to this helpless child. It is even more interesting that the prophets of the Old Testament yearned for the coming of the messiah when all the nations will stream to the temple in Jerusalem to worship God. However, here we find the gentiles (magi) not finding what they need in Jerusalem but finding it in Jesus himself. Jesus is the new temple and the weight of Jewish rule lies in his body and not in an earthly city
So yes, Christmas is a celebration of love and giving, and evidence of God’s love for humanity, but it is much more than that. At least, that’s what Luke, Matthew, and the early church are claiming, for they saw in the coming of Jesus a change in the center of power from the armies of this world to Jesus himself. They saw in the coming of Christ a change in socioeconomic balances whereby the rule of the rich will end and the poor will be free. They saw a fulfillment of the promises of old of a just ruler over all the nations. All this is the “true meaning of Christmas” and nothing less.
Where is this happening? How? The answer must come from those who claim to be followers of the baby king. Do we live according to a just kingdom for the poor? Is our Lord Jesus or the empires of this world? What does it mean to be a people of “love” towards the poor and marginalized? Do we run after power or do we sing with Mary, the rulers have lost their thrones and the humble take their place?
