Probably most of you have heard by now about the burkini ban in France.

As the picture above shows, a burkini is a full-body swimsuit that covers everything except the face, hands and feet. It was named a burkini because it is combination of “bikini” and “burka.” Basically, Muslim woman who did not want to show their bodies in public but at the same time do enjoy going for a swim, can now do that – thank you burkini.

The French government, as part of the general trend there in the past decade, issued a ban last week on wearing burkinis to the beach because they were considered to be religious clothing.

Social media went crazy when the picture of a police officer asking a woman to take off her burkini went viral. A few days ago the government, under pressure from human rights groups, stopped the ban. However, more than 30 French mayors have decided to continue the ban.

Public opinion is split over this. Some think the ban is necessary and see any type of woman covering as oppressive to women. They say: if Muslims want to wear burkinis then let them go live in Muslim countries.

Others, including my humble self, think the ban is wrong. Let me give you my two reasons for being against the burkini ban in France:

1 – The burkini ban is impossible to implement

How do you define body covering? So if a nun wanted to have a swim, is it also banned? What about someone with a skin disease who cannot expose his/her body to the sun but wants to have a swim? What if someone does not have money to buy a swimsuit? Can one cover half their arm? Can I wear a skirt? Can a man swim in his jeans? Should the police carry rulers and measuring tapes, inspecting every woman on the beach?

My mom never was a fan of swimming but we were, so when she took us to the beach in Lebanon when we were young she stayed on the beach wearing a dress (and feeding us – you have no idea how much food can fit in a small beach bag) while we ran around half-naked on the sand. Was my mother wearing a burkini? Nah. But she did not feel like taking off her clothes. Does then the law include her?

I am against this law because it is absurd.

2 – The burkini ban is another form of oppression against women

When will men stop trying to control women’s bodies?

In Saudi Arabia and Iran women are required to cover their bodies, while in France women are banned from covering their heads. Is there a difference? In the type of control, yes. But, fundamentally, it is the same case: a law forces all females to behave in a certain way!

Rousseau said that women were a “potential source of disorder to be tamed with reason,” Freud called women the “enemy of civilization,” the apostle Paul declared that women remain silent, in Islam hundreds of rules exist to monitor the clothes and behaviour of women, and across the centuries women have been associated with emotion while males with reason, with the body while males with the mind, and with chaos while males with order.
Women are either bombarded with orders to be modest and submissive, or constantly challenged to live up to an impossible beauty standard of thin, hairless, and blond.

There is one thing which needs to be banned, and Jesus famously said in Matthew 5:28: “I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” He then goes on to very kindly ask men to tear out their eyes cut their arms if they can’t control their lust. Jesus moves the focus from the body of the woman (to cover, uncover, or control it) to the heart of the man. He declares that the source of the problem, and solution, rests with how men view, look, think about women.

What needs to be banned? The lust of men! The lusting eyes of men! The controlling oppressiveness of men! The mindless idea that men are better than women! The evil heart of males that imagines that he owns a woman, has the right to shout obscenities at her if she is wearing a short skirt, or hit her in the face if she is his wife.

The idea that refuses to die over thousands of years that somehow men have the right to tell women how to dress, walk, behave, and live.

That, my friends, needs to be banned.

Women are free to wear a burkini or wear a bikini, go to the beach or stay at home, become a teacher or become an engineer, marry or stay single, get 10 kids or 1 kid and a dog…

It is none of my business.

على الأرجح سمعتم عن حظر البوركيني في فرنسا

كما ترينا الصورة أعلاه، البوركيني هو لباس سباحة يغطي كل أجزاء الجسد ما عدا الوجه واليدين والقدمين. سُمّيَ بوركيني لأنه خليط بين لباس البحر “البيكيني” واللباس الشرعي “البركا” (الأسماء بالإنكليزية). والأمر، بكل بساطة، أن النساء المسلمات اللواتي لا يردن أن تظهر أجسادهن في مكان عام ولكن هن يحبنّ السباحة أصبح لديهن المجال لجمع الإثنين – شكرا بوركيني

الحكومة الفرنسية، وهذا جزء من توجهها العام في السنين العشر الماضية، أصدرت حظرا الأسبوع الماضي على لبس البوركيني على الشواطئ بحجة أنه لباس ديني

جن جنون وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي عندما انتشرت صورة لشرطي يطلب من امراة خلع البوركيني على الشاطئ. قبل بضعة أيام، وتحت ضغط من جمعيات حقوق الإنسان، أوقفت الحكومة الحظر. ولكن أكثر من 30 بلدية فرنسية أعلنت الإلتزام بالحظر وعدم تجميده

الرأي العام منقسم حول هذه القضية. البعض يقول أن الحظر على البوركيني ضروري وهذا البوركيني جزء من الظلم الذي يلحق بالمرأة. ويقولون: اذا ارادت المرأة المسلمة ارتداء البوركيني فلترتديه في البلدان المسلمة

البعض الآخر، ومنهم شخصي المتواضع، يعتقدون أن الحظر خطأ. دعوني أقدم سببين لوقوفي ضد حظر البوركيني في فرنسا

السبب الأول – يستحيل تطبيق حظر البوركيني

كيف تحدد غطاء الجسد؟ ماذا لو أرادت راهبة أن تسبح، هل هي أيضا ممنوعة؟ ماذا لو كان لأحدهم مرض جلدي ولا يستطيع تعريض جسده للشمس ولكنه يريد السباحة، ألا يستطيع؟ ماذا لو لم تمتلك امرأة مالا لشراء ثياب سباحة؟ هل تستطيع أن تغطي نصف يدها؟ هل تستطيع ارتداء تنورة؟ هل يستطيع رجل أن يسبح وهو مرتديا البنطلون؟ هل على الشرطة حمل أشرطة القياس والتأكد من كل امراة على الشاطئ؟

أمي لا تحبذ السباحة ولكننا نحب السباحة. لذا، عندما كانت تأخذنا للبحر عندما كنا صغار كانت تجلس على الشاطئ مرتدية فستان (وتطعمنا – لا يوجد لديك أي فكرة عن مدى اتساع شنطة بحر صغير لأطايب وولائم كيبرة) بينما نلعب نحن نصف عراة على الرمل. هل كانت أمي ترتدي البوركيني؟ كلا. ولكنها لم تكن تريد خلع ثيابها. هلى القانون ينطبق عليها أيضا؟

أنا ضد هذا القانون لأنه سخيف

السبب الثاني – حظر البوركيني هو شكل من أشكال الظلم ضد المرأة

متى سيتوقف الرجال عن محاولة السيطرة على أجساد النساء؟

في السعودية وايران القانون يجبر النساء على تغطية اجسادهن وفي فرنسا القانون يمنعهن عن تغطية رؤوسهن. هل هناك فرق؟ نعم في شكل السيطرة ولكن في الأساس الحالتان هما القانون يحاول فرض طريقة تصرف محددة على كل النساء

روسو قال أن النساء “مصدر محتمل للفوضى ويجب كبحهن بالعقل،” فرويد سمى النساء “أعداء الحضارة،” الرسول بولس أعلن أن على النساء الصمت في حضرة الرجال، في الإسلام يوجد مئات القوانين التي تحدد لباس وتصرف النساء، وعبر العصور تم ربط النساء بالمشاعر والجسد والفوضى والرجال بالعقل والفكر والترتيب

اما يتم قصف النساء بأوامر الحشمة والخضوع، أو تحديهم بمعيار جمال مستحيل من نحافة وعدم وجود شعر وشقار

يوجد أمر واحد يجب علينا حظره، ويسوع عبر عنه في قوله المشهور في متى 5: 28: “أقول لكم كل من نظر لامراة ليشتهيها فقد زنى معها في قلبه.” ومن ثم يكمل ليطلب من الرجال، بكل حنان، أن يزيلوا عيونهم أو يقطعو أياديهم ليسيطروا على شهوتهم. يسوع يحرك التركيز من جسد المرأة (تغطيته أوتعريته أوالسيطرة عليه) إلى قلب الرجل. يعلن أن مصدر المشكلة والحل هما في كيفية نظر وتفكير الرجال عن النساء

ما الذي يجب حظره؟ شهوة الرجال! عيون الرجال! ظلم الرجال المسيطر! الفكرة الغبية أن الرجال أفضل من النساء! قلب الرجال الشرير الذي يعتقد أنه يمتلك المرأة، وأن لديه الحق بالتفوه بالبذائة اذا رأى امرأة ترتدي تنورة قصيرة أو ضرب زوجته على وجهها

الفكرة التي ترفض الموت، والتي رافقت البشرية منذ بدئها، هي أن الرجل لديه الحق بتنظيم لباس ومشي وتصرف وحياة المرأة.

هذا، يا أصدقائي، ما يجب حظره

المرأة لديها حرية لبس البوركيني أو البيكيني، الذهاب للشاطئ أو البقاء في المنزل، أن تكون معلمة أو مهندسة، أن تتزوج أو تبقى عزباء، أن تجلب 10 أولاد أو ولد واحد مع كلب…

ليس من شأني أن أقرر
