A few days ago Michel Samaha was released by bail from prison. For those who do not know him, Michel Samaha is a politician and former minister who was arrested more than three years ago smuggling bombs into Lebanon from Syria.
Upon his release a great number of Lebanese citizens raised their voices in anger and opposition to the step. The outcry is logical and understandable. Michel Samaha is a convicted criminal, or at the very least, an assistant to terrorists who were planning to plant bombs in different parts of Lebanon.
Not that it matters, but I did not join the national outcry against Michel Samaha. I did not post an angry post on Facebook nor did I join in the demonstrations around his house.
To be honest, I felt disgusted by the outcry against Michel Samaha.
I was disgusted by it since the same political figures (in this case from the 14 March coalition) who raised their angelic voices of justice against the release of Michel Samaha were warlords in the Lebanese civil war which killed hundreds of thousands of people, are themselves convicted of different crimes, and have been part of the corrupt political ruling party in the recent decades.
I was disgusted because the release of Michel Samaha has been happening on an almost yearly basis. How many criminals have walked out free from our prisons? How many criminals roam the prisons free to use cell phones and continue their operations by proxy? Yet many only raise their voices when a person from the opposing party has been released and forget justice when it is their party or religious sect who is getting the preferential treatment!
I was disgusted because we as Lebanese people, you as a Lebanese citizen is just as criminal, and even worse than, Michel Samaha.
You are a terrorist when you remain silent while the garbage accumulates on our doorsteps for the last 6 months
You are a terrorist when you haven’t even started to recycle but only nag about the garbage crisis
You are a terrorist when you do not pay your electricity bill or any tax for that matter
You are a terrorist when you have been voting for the same political parties for the last 30 years with Lebanon falling into deeper and deeper debt
You are a terrorist for turning a blind eye while women, children, foreign workers, and animals are abused on a daily basis in Lebanon
You are a terrorist for driving like crazy on a road packed with innocent cars and driving against all known traffic rules just to save a few minutes of your precious time (time you usually spend smoking your arguileh on your war-torn balcony)
You are a terrorist for not giving a single thought towards our dwindling forests, clean air, clean water, and just about any healthy environment left in this small country
You are a terrorist for treating the Syrian refugees as second-class human beings, or lower, just because they have a different accent than your civilized language
You are a terrorist for stealing electricity from the public lines, stealing water from your neighbour, and stealing just about anything that is not locked and sealed
You are a terrorist policeman who does not help the oppressed, you are a terrorist minister who is stealing public money, you are a terrorist worker who leaves pot-holes the size of giant turtles in the streets, you are a terrorist government that does not hear the cries of the poor
(Sigh)
Let us cry out against Michel Smaha. But please, for once, for a month or a day or a minute or only a few seconds, would you consider the terrorist in you? The terrorist that is you?
The late Khalil Gebran wrote “you have your Lebanon and I have my Lebanon”
The sad truth is, if we continue down the path we are traveling on as a nation, pretty soon we will have no Lebanon but that of poetry and dreams.
We all deserve to be holding hands with Michel Samaha in a bottomless prison for taking the Lebanon given to us by God and turning it into a polluted and corrupted piece of land.
Will we ever change from being terrorists to being citizens?
Let us stand in prayer:
Lord,
Forgive us,
We have taken
The land of our children
And terrorised it into becoming
A burial place of their dreams

مدونة #38: أنت ارهابيّ أكثر من ميشال سماحة
قبل بضعة أيام تم تخلية سبيل ميشال سماحة من الحبس بكفالة. لمن لا يعلم من هو ميشال سماحة، هو سياسي ووزير سابق تم القبض عليه أكثر من 3 سنوات وهو يهرّب المتفجرات إلى لبنان من سوريا
وبعد أن تم إطلاق سراحه ضجّت مواقع التواصل الإجتماعي بالمواطنين اللبنانيين الذين رفعوا الأصوات الغاضبة احتجاجا على هذه الخطوة. صرختهم منطقية ومفهومة. ميشال سماحة مجرم مدان أو على الأقل شخص مساعد لإرهابيين كانوا ينوون زرع قنابل في عدة مناطق لبنانية
أعرف أن رأيي لا يقدّم ولا يأخّر، ولكنني لم أشترك في الصرخة الوطنية ضد ميشال سماحة. لم أنشر تعليقات غاضبة على فايسبوك ولم أشترك بالمظاهرات الغاضبة حول منزل ميشال سماحة
بكل صراحة، شعرت بالإشمئزاز من الصراخ ضد ميشال سماحة
شعرت بالإشمئزاز لأن نفس الشخصيات السياسية (في هذه الحالة من تجمع 14 آذار) التي رفعت صوت العدل الملائكي ضد إطلاق ميشال سماحة هم كانوا أمراء الحرب في الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية التي قتلت مئات الآلاف من اللبنانيين، وهم متهمون بعدة جرائم، وكانوا جزء من الطبقة السياسية الحاكمة الفاسدة في السنين الماضية
شعرت بالإشمئزاز لأن عملية إطلاق ميشال سماحة تحدث سنويا. كم مجرم مشى حرا من سجنه؟ كم مجرم يجوب الحبس حرا ومتسلحا بالهواتف الخليوية ليدير عملياته الإجرامية من داخل الحبس؟ ولكن البعض فقط يرفعون صوتهم عندما يكون الشخص الذي أُطلق من الحزب المنافس وينسون العدل عندما تكون المعاملة المميزة تصيب أحد من حزبهم أو طائفتهم
شعرت بالإشمئزاز لأننا كشعب لبناني، أنت كمواطن لبناني، إرهابي مثل ميشال وسماحة وأسوأ
أنت إرهابي عندما تعتصم بالصمت بينما تتراكم النفايات على أبوابنا لستة أشهر
أنت إرهابي عندما لم تبدأ بإعادة التدوير وتكتفي بالنقّ على أزمة النفايات
انت إرهابي عندما لا تدفع فاتورة الكهرباء أو أي فاتورة أخرى أصلا
أنت إرهابي عندما تستمر بالتصويت لنفس الحزب السياسي لـ30 سنة بينما يستمر لبنان بالهبوط في الدين المالي العميق والمتزايد
أنت إرهابي لأنك تدير وجهك عن رؤية المعاملة المسيئة ضد المرأة، الأطفال، العمال الأجانب، والحيوانات بشكل يومي في لبنان
أنت إرهابي لأنك تسوق سيارتك مثل المجنون على طريق مزدحم بالسيارات البريئة وتسوق ضد كل قوانين السير المعروفة للبشر لتوفّر بضع دقائق من وقتك الثمين – وقت تمضيه بتدخين الأركيلة على شرفتك المتهاوية
أنت إرهابي لأنك لا تعطي ولو اهتمام صغير للغابات والهواء النظيف والماء النظيف المتناقص لحد أنه لم يبقى إلا القليل من البيئة الصحيّة في هذا البلد الصغير
أنت إرهابي لأنك تعامل اللاجئين السوريين وكأنهم بشر من مرتبة ثانية أو منخفضة أكثر فقط لأن لهجتهم مختلفة عن لغتك الراقية
انت إرهابي لأنك تسرق الكهرباء من الخطوط العامة، وتسرق الماء من الجيران، وتسرق اي شيء غير محروس بالكلاب البوليسية جنود النخبة
أنت شرطي إرهابي لأنك لا تساعد المظلومين، أنت وزير إرهابي لأنك تسرق المال العام، أنت عامل إرهابي لأنك تترك حفر بحجم فيل صغير في الطرقات العامة، أنت حكومة إرهابية لأنك لا تسمعين لصراخ الفقراء

دعونا نرفع الصوت ضد ميشال سماحة. ولكن رجاءا، ولو لشهر أو يوم أو دقيقة أو بضعة لحظات ، هل تفكر بالإرهابي الذي فيك؟ الإرهابي الذي هو أنت؟
جبران خليل جبران كتب قائلا – لكم لبنانكم ولي لبناني
الحقيقة المحزنة هي أنه إن استمرينا في هذا الطريق الذي نسلكه كأمة فعن قريب لن يبقى هناك لبنان غير لبنان الشعر والأحلام
كلنا نستحق أن نمسك الأيادي مع ميشال سماحة في زنزانة عميقة لأننا أخذنا اللبنان الذي أعطاه لنا الله وحولناه إلى قطعة أرض فاسدة وموبوءة
هل سنتغير يوما من إرهابيين إلى مواطنين؟
دعونا نقف لنصلي
يا رب
سامحنا
لقد أخذنا
أرض أولادنا
وأرهبناها حتى أصبحت
مدفنا لأحلامهم
